Those statistics, which come as no surprise to the Consumer Council, were produced by the Policy and Resources Department. They compared 58 items in Jersey and UK from June 1999 to June 2002. Over that period all items in the meat and fish category, except for cod fillets, were more expensive, on average, in Jersey than in the UK.
A number of things were cheaper, though, notably some produce grown in the Island. Maincrop potatoes, for instance were 32% cheaper in 2002, cauliflowers were 38% cheaper in 2001, although they were 9% more expensive in 2002. Overall, fruit and vegetables were 8% more expensive in Jersey.
The cost of dairy produce was quite substantially higher, as was coffee, tea, flour and sugar. Bread was 47% more expensive.
